Clinical Research Fellow in Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow in Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine to start between August & December 2018.  This post is for a period of 6 to 12 months, subject to satisfactory appraisal.

The post comprises 50% research and 50% clinical activity:


This post is aimed at post-FRCA trainees (or equivalent) who are interested in gaining skills, experience and academic outputs in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine research.  Fellows can expect to be involved in various stages of the clinical research process, from study conception and design, through to eventual publication.  There will also be ample opportunity to develop non-clinical research skills, including partaking in systematic reviews, contributing to Delphi analyses, and exploring different aspects of the editorial process.  There might also be an opportunity to undertake a higher degree, which may be supported.  This research fellowship aims to fulfil the Royal College of Anaesthetists curriculum requirements to achieve Advanced Level Academic and Research Training (Annex G), and activities will be mapped to this curriculum.

Fellows will be expected to submit at least one study for ethical approval, apply for one research grant, contribute to the conduct of at least two recruiting clinical trials, and obtain at least one peer-review publication as a minimum per year.

There are currently seven recruiting (or soon-to-be recruiting) clinical trials, including several portfolio studies, with five in process.  The Research Group currently comprises a Research Lead, one Research Service Manager, two dedicated Research Nurses, and a cohort of academically-oriented consultants who are either chief investigators, principle investigators, or co-investigators in clinical studies.  The department has the senior editor of Anaesthesia, an editorial board member of Anaesthesia and editor of Anaesthesia Cases, the president of RA-UK, and a heavy DAS presence.  Research activity is conducted across both sites. Although still in its infancy, the TAP Research Group has enthusiasm, energy, and most importantly, unwavering support from the directorate.

Applicants must have a fundamental understanding of clinical research methodology, have demonstrated an active interest in academic learning and development, and be committed to furthering their experiences with time, energy and creativity.


Clinical activity comprises 50% of this post by way of participation in the 1:8 full shift rota. The clinical duties will involve long days, nights and weekend shifts across any of the anaesthetic rotas (priority/emergency theatres, obstetrics, overnight intensive recovery OIR, paediatrics).  The exact nature of the clinical work will be dependant on level of competence and departmental need.  This will be discussed further at interview.

The candidate will never work outside their safe level of competence.
