The Department of Anaesthesia is seeking up to 8 full-time (10 PA) Consultants to join a dynamic, enthusiastic team to continue to take the expansion of our department forward. The department is soon to become its own directorate in April 2018, with 110 consultants, which should open up new opportunities for Anaesthesia to be in the driving seat, for taking the peri-operative pathway forward. It is a time for adapting to change and innovation. We are therefore looking for individuals with appropriate skills to complement our team and help keep the service in the forefront of clinical and academic excellence. This Job is advertised as ‘general’ but specific areas of interest will be welcomed and accommodated. Expanding clinical areas include, Vascular, Renal transplant, Peri-operative medicine, Cardiac Cath Lab, Urology, Thoracics, Orthopaedics and Major GI Surgery along with roles in peri-operative care and interventional radiology. Consultants will initially have a fair degree of flexibility in their Job Plans and would contribute to clinical groups and cross-cover within their specialist areas. We are also keen to accommodate candidates with academic, IT, management and quality improvement experience. We are now a very large department and are very interested in seeing those with ‘niche’ interests

The Department covers all surgical specialities with the exception of neurosurgery and liver transplantation.  We anaesthetise over 50,000 patients per year.  The department has a special interest in teaching & training, regional anaesthesia, patient optimisation, enhanced recovery and difficult airway skills.  We have an active role in the trust’s high fidelity simulation centre.  We have equipped all our anaesthetic sites with Drager Primus anaesthetic machines, Phillips monitors and Sonosite ultrasound.

You must be fully registered with the GMC, hold a Licence to Practice and be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of attaining your CCT or equivalent at interview stage.

The interviews will take place during February and March 2018 and may take place on more than one day. Candidates with a CCT in August 2018 will be eligible. We are especially interested in candidates who are able to join us from April 2018 to summer 2018.

The post holder will have regular contact with vulnerable adults and/or children (0-18 years) and therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

As an organisation, we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients.  This includes asking certain groups of staff to work more flexibly so that we can offer services to patients in the evenings and at weekends.  We regard this flexibility as essential if we are to continue to provide first class patient care in the future.  As a result, any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern of working in the future if required and in accordance with the provisions of the new Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust consultant contract.
