Band 6, Cancer Family History Nurse Specialist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic nurse to join our Cancer Risk Assessment Team. There is an increased demand for personalised cancer risk assessment, but most individuals do not require genetic input. Our Cancer Risk Assessment Service bridges the gaps between the primary, secondary and tertiary care settings. Our service was established in 2010 and has been recognised by the London Cancer Alliance as "Gold Standard". The service is run by skilled cancer family history nurses with support from the cancer genetics clinicians. The post holder will join a well established and friendly team.

The post holder will be based in the Clinical Genetics Department at Guy's Hospital, but is expected to travel to different clinic locations within London and the South East. As a cancer family history nurse you will run independent risk assessment clinics where you will assess patient's cancer risk based on NICE guidelines, provide health promotion and lifestyle advice, arrange screening and establish eligibility for a genetics referral.

We are looking for a committed band 6 nurse with excellent inter-personal and communication skills, who ideally has experience in working within cancer family history/risk assessment or in general cancer nursing. It is important that the applicant has a good understanding of evidence based nursing practice and has, at some capacity, worked with people who are distressed. It would also be beneficial to have interest in teaching. However, as a department, we are dedicated to training and developing staff based on their needs.

Informal visits are strongly recommended.

Applicant requirements

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the resident labour market test. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires employers to complete this test to show that no suitably qualified EEA or EU worker can fill the post. For further information please visit the UKVI website. From 6 April 2017, Tier 2 skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, must present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement. Guidance can be found here Criminal Records Checks for Overseas Applicants.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.
