The Department of Gastroenterology is seeking a new full-time (10 PA) consultant gastroenterologist to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team.  This is a new post for a consultant in Gastroenterology with interest in emergency Gastroenterology who will help us meet the challenges of our expanding clinical, academic and training portfolio.

The department offers a wide range of services to patients with gastrointestinal and liver disorders, including endoscopic ultrasound, tertiary interventional endoscopy, pancreatico-biliary procedures, oesophageal pathophysiology, enteral/parenteral nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology services.

The aim of this post is to offer high and consistent quality care to the many inpatients admitted with gastrointestinal, liver and nutritional disease and to improve the management of the increasing patient flow from acute admission.

His/her main task will be to offer improved outcomes, better cost effectiveness and shorter hospital stays, even via the implementation of novel models of outpatient care.

He/She will support the departmental strategic plan to build a team of Emergency Gastroenterology consultants, partly by new appointments partly by reconfiguring the job plans of the consultants currently in post. This team will have the task to offer daily liaison with the emergency department aimed at admission avoidance and/or quick transfer under specialist care as well as daily consultant-led rounds of the Gastroenterology ward.

The post holder is expected to set up dedicated hot clinics, specifically focussed on supporting admission avoidance and safe early discharge. Finally he/she is expected to support endoscopy services and training and, in particular, to contribute to the delivery of emergency endoscopy and to improve the pathways for inpatient endoscopy.

General enquiries, about the job or for an informal discussion about this post should be directed to Dr. Giovanni Tritto, Service Lead for Gastroenterology (giovanni.tritto@gstt.nhs.uk). Candidates would not be expected to visit the hospital or contact the wider service members until after short-listing.

As an organisation, we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients.  This includes offering services to patients in the evenings and at weekends. As a result, any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern of working in the future if required and in accordance with the provisions of the new Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust consultant contract.
