Guys’ and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is made up of two of London’s best known teaching hospitals and employs over 8,500 staff. Last year we saw 478,000 outpatients and treated 72,000 inpatients and 42,000 day case patients.

This post is recognized by the Royal College of Surgeons of England National Surgical Fellowship Scheme and it is suitable for post-CCST SpR’s who are interested in obtaining further specialist experience before taking up a Consultant post.

This Fellowship is aimed at SpR’s coming to the end of their rotation, who have obtained their exit exam, part III of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or equivalent (e.g. FRCAS or European Board Exam in ORL-HNS). Extensive operative experience is expected. Candidates who are not able to provide evidence of being passed part III or equivalent will not be considered and should abstain of applying for the post.

The post has no recognition for training towards CCT. GMC registration must be obtained.

The successful candidate will be working with Mr Jean-Pierre Jeannon, Mr Richard Oakley, Mr Asit Arora and Mr Ricard Simo on the Head and Neck firm and with the Oral and Maxillofacial Head and Neck Oncology Team under the supervision of Mr Luke Cascarini, Mr Alistair Fry, Mr Andrew Lyons and Mr Luke Cascarini. There will be opportunity to gain extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment head and neck cancer, salivary gland and thyroid disorders as well as ample opportunity to carry-out clinical research in the relevant fields.

The Fellowship is under the supervision of Mr Ricard Simo who is the Lead Educational Supervisor for the post. The Fellowship includes all aspects of Advanced Head and Neck Surgery with emphasis on Head and Neck Oncological Surgery. The Unit has a large tertiary referral base for Complex Head and Neck Oncological Surgery including Salvage Surgery, Thyroid and Salivary Gland Cancer. The Unit also provides a tertiary referral base for complex Thyroid Surgery including revision and mediastinal surgery, malignant skull base surgery and surgery for osteoradionecrosis.

Core components of the Fellowship include: Full weekly Head and Neck Oncology and Thyroid MDT meetings, ablative and reconstructive surgery, complex thyroid and salivary gland surgery, airway surgery, revision and salvage surgery, regular audit and clinical research.

The post is fixed term for 1 year and it is based at Guy’s Hospital where the Head and Neck Surgery Cancer Unit is established and weekly Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Oncology and Thyroid Meetings are held.

When On-call the post-holder will be covering general Otorhinolaryngology at Guy’s, St Thomas and King’s College Hospital, department on a one in eleven basis with internal cover. This will be from home.
