The Department of Critical Care is seeking a number of new full-time Consultant Intensivists to join a dynamic, ambitious and highly motivated clinical team dedicated to delivering first class, state of the art therapy to the critically ill. As well as providing critical care to our patients, the successful candidates would have the opportunity to maintain specialty skillsets. The Department is particularly interested in recruiting team members who can offer, or wish to develop, specialist skills and contribute in key areas such as undergraduate educational management, simulation, pulmonary hypertension, peri-operative critical care, HDU/outreach, and expert echocardiography for the critically ill.

GSTT critical care consists of a number of clinical areas across the trust incorporating a mixture of elective (GCCU, Overnight Intensive Recovery) and emergency work (mainly East Wings and the HDU’s), the case mix is broad and challenging. In 2014/15 there were 5306 critical care admissions across the department. Further performance/operational metrics are shared via the national database annually.

GSTT critical care was commissioned in 2010 as a tertiary centre for adult severe acute respiratory failure. We provide flexible, multi-modality advanced respiratory support) to patients in our assigned network in South and South East England and beyond. This includes a 24/7 consultant-led ECMO/severe respiratory failure retrieval service, which also incorporates the development of a VA programme for the management of reversible cardiogenic shock and eCPR. We will be actively looking to expand these capabilities as required by the commissioners and are actively collaborating with other centres to maintain quality.

The department is due to open a new 11 bed state of the art facility in April 2018 which should help significantly with any capacity issues and we are actively changing working models to provide long term sustainability. We now have a fully funded critical care follow up clinic and have recently established a 24/7 outreach service. This project runs alongside other initiatives and investments in order t. For example, a new research project will be evaluating the impact of the use of telemedicine in Critical Care – the first project of its kind in the UK. New members of the team are expected to contribute their ideas and expertise to such endeavor.

The department has key objectives and ongoing initiatives in research, education and a firm commitment to quality improvement and safe practice aligned to a performance scorecard, which is reported on a monthly basis to the trust.

This is an excellent opportunity become part of a dynamic team in an active and progressive teaching hospital environment.

As an organisation, we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. We regard this flexibility as essential if we are to continue to provide first class patient care in the future.
