Applications are invited for a six months post as Senior Clinical Fellow in the Paediatric Airway Service. This post would suit trainees approaching the end of their training and is open to all sub specialities including anaesthesia, adult and paediatric intensive care medicine, paediatric respiratory medicine and ENT surgery. The post will be based at The Evelina Children’s Hospital, Guy’s & and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (Lead Centre: South Thames). There will be on call commitments in the PICU but the main focus of the work will involve supporting the paediatric intensive care airway service.

The paediatric critical care airway service is based within the PICU and has arisen from the need for airway interventions in a cohort of patients admitted to PICU. The majority of these have an underlying cardiac/vascular diagnosis.

The team provide a bronchoscopy service to the following patients:

  • PICU bronchoscopies - 150/year
  • Vascular airway bronchoscopies - 50/year (cardiac theatre)
  • Airway stents -15-20/year (cath lab) in collaboration with paediatric IR
  • Elective airway lists for bronchoscopy +/- CT scan will start from January 2018. These lists are for suspected vascular/cardiac compression syndromes.

The team meets with the respiratory service on a weekly basis to review all bronchoscopies done and to discuss any complex airway patients. There is strong multidisciplinary team support including paediatric ENT and general surgeons, paediatric interventional and imaging radiology consultants, speech and language specialists, physiotherapists and specialist nurses.

You must be registered with the General Medical Council. Minimum educational qualifications for entry are MRCPCH, FRCA or equivalent. You must also have completed a significant period of time in your chosen primary specialty and have preferably had some experience in Cardiac and/or Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine.

As an organisation we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends.

Closing date: 08/04/2018, Midnight.
Interview date: 24/04/2018.
