The Thoracic Surgery, Peri-operative recovery unit and Head and Neck wards in the surgical oncology directorate at Guy’s Hospital are offering a unique opportunity for experienced band 5 nurses to rotate between two of our acute surgical wards - Blundell (head and neck) and Dorcas (thoracic) and to the post operative recovery unit (Please note permanent jobs are also available on both wards if you do not wish to rotate).

We are looking for motivated, caring and compassionate registered nurses to join the teams and rotate through our thoracic surgery, Surgical recovery and head and neck specialties. All areas of the directorate are passionate about constantly improving our services and delivering high quality, individualised care to our patients.

Successful candidates will spend 6 months in each area and will gain a variety of experiences through which you will develop specialist clinical skills and knowledge whilst being supported by senior and experienced teams. To compliment the various areas, you would be offered the relevant study days in order to support your professional development.

On successful completion of the 3 placements and local clinical competencies you will have the opportunity to continue to work within the directorate.
Opportunities are available to develop transferable managerial skills with the support of the senior nursing teams, enhancing confidence and leadership skills in all 3 areas.

Blundell ward is a 22 bed Head and Neck and ENT specialist unit. We provide holistic care for Head and Neck cancer patients undergoing major resection and reconstructive surgery, supportive rehabilitation as well as end of life care. We also care for elective ENT patients for short stay surgery and accept emergency admissions. We work within a large, dynamic multidisciplinary team to provide Head and Neck cancer services to the whole of the South East.

We have six beds with cardiac monitoring for high dependent Head and Neck patients to step down from critical care. Critical care or tracheostomy experience would be desirable. However we do offer a comprehensive induction and training programme to support you in becoming an expert in complex airway management, enteral feeding, wound care and psychological support.

You will be supported by a strong deputy team, Ward Sister, Clinical Nurse Specialists, the in-patient Matron team as well as a community Head and Neck team.

Dorcas ward is a 28 bed thoracic surgical ward, caring for a varied spectrum of patients, often with complex health needs. Our patients require complex physical care, both pre and post operatively, alongside emotional and psychological support not just for undergoing surgery but also the potential diagnosis/ outcomes of treatment. The majority of our patients are elective admissions however we accept a large number of transfers from other trusts to administer specialist care and surgeries that may not be available locally.

Dorcas ward prides itself on delivering excellent individualised care which is reflected in our patient feedback surveys. Upholding the trust values and striving to always enhance the patient’s clinical journey is the centre of care delivery. The dynamic team on Dorcas ward have a broad collective knowledge and experiences which is enhanced and continually developed through individual study days, links roles and group in-house study days. The nursing staff are always helpful and keen to support and promote new staff and their development on Dorcas ward.

Dorcas Ward is a specialist Thoracic Unit caring for level one and two patients undergoing emergency chest and Lung Oncology Surgery.

Nurses working on Dorcas Ward develop acute care skills, an understanding of emergency surgery care and an understanding of the lung oncology pathway.

 The Thoracic Nursing role requires sharp assessment skills and attention to detail, working closely with Intensive care and Recovery to maximize patients stay and to improve our patient outcomes.

 The nursing team work alongside the Ward Sister and Nurse Practitioner team with support of the Thoracic Surgeons in treating patients who are potentially very unwell in often acute and life threatening situations. Nurses working in this setting will be exposed to emergency care, cardiac monitoring, high dependency patients, and Nurse Led clinics.

Guy's post operative recovery is a busy unit caring for patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures including head and neck, thoracic, orthopaedic and urology. 

This part of the rotation is an excellent opportunity to develop skills in immediate post operative management including acute airway care and post operative analgesia whilst working as part of the surgical multidisciplinary team.
